With the growing trend of tourism activities featuring visits to local projects, more children are involved in tourism and can be put at risk of exploitation. As part of their human rights due diligence, tourism businesses need to develop child-sensitive products, implement policies and adopt approaches that recognise children's vulnerability, seek to mitigate risks and ensure their safety. This webinar is targeted at tourism businesses and other stakeholders offering project visits where tourists come into contact with children during their travels.

Think Childsafe has developed 7 Tips to highlight how certain well-intentioned actions by tourists can actually harm children. Visiting orphanages or schools, giving to begging children, or “slum tourism” may seem helpful, but often keep children in poverty or expose them to abuse. These tips show what to avoid and offer positive ways to make a real difference.

They provide therapy in schools, train professionals, develop resources, and advocate for better services. They also offer specialized interventions for children showing harmful sexual behaviors, often resulting from earlier abuse and neglect.

Childline is an effective non-profit organization that works collectively to protect children from all forms of violence and to create a culture of children's rights in South Africa.
