Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) is pleased to announce that Turaco Treetops, a nature-based lodge in Uganda’s Kibale Forest region, has achieved FTT-Engaged status. This milestone highlights Turaco Treetops’ journey toward establishing Uganda as a leader in responsible tourism, and aligning with FTT’s mission to promote fair and ethical practices in the industry.
The FTT-Engaged program provides businesses with a structured pathway toward full Fair Trade Tourism Certification. By achieving this first step, Turaco Treetops demonstrates a strong commitment to conservation, ethical business practices, and ensuring that local community benefit from the tourism gems of the area.
Nestled on the edge of Kibale National Park, Turaco Treetops is deeply committed to conserving the rich biodiversity of the area while offering guests an immersive nature experience led by local guides. The lodge supports chimpanzee and habitat conservation, as well as sustainable agroforestry initiatives through its contributions to the Chris Roberts Forest Foundation. In addition, Turaco Treetops actively engages with local communities, providing employment opportunities and promoting responsible tourism practices that benefit both residents and visitors.

Reflecting on the FTT-Engaged process, Turaco Treetops stated that "going through the process to become Fair Trade Tourism Engaged has been an interesting journey. The process has provided a valuable platform for us to review and enhance our practices, focusing on the environmental, socio-cultural, and economic impacts of our operations. It was helpful to discuss these aspects within the team, and we look forward to continuing to improve our practices and working towards becoming Fair Trade Tourism Certified."
Achieving FTT-Engaged also helps Turaco Treetops prepare for evolving green claims legislation from key EU source markets. By proactively adopting independently verifiable sustainability practices, the lodge strengthens its credibility and appeal to impact-conscious travelers. As part of the growing FTT-Engaged network, Turaco Treetops reinforces its dedication to ethical tourism and sustainable development. FTT looks forward to supporting its journey toward full certification.
