This globally recognised, independently verified certification is awarded to tourism businesses that demonstrate a genuine commitment to using tourism to benefit local people, safeguard the environment, and support destination development priorities. Sala Beach House and Spa has met these rigorous standards across key areas of sustainability, including fair employment, local social and economic benefits, as well as responsible environmental practices.

Tucked into the subtropical coastline of South Africa’s Dolphin Coast, Sala Beach House offers an intimate, nature-connected experience with just nine beautifully appointed rooms overlooking the Indian Ocean and a wellness spa infused by African botanicals. While the setting is undeniably luxurious, what sets Sala apart is its quiet but deliberate commitment to doing tourism differently.

From the outset, the owners of Sala have been guided by a strong sustainability ethic—one that places people and planet at the heart of their operations. Among their practices are:

  • Repurposing an old structure into a stunning open plan venue
  • Ensuring resource efficiency and renewable energy are prioritized
  • Replacing plastic with glass options and reducing waste
  • Sourcing locally to support nearby businesses and producers
  • Fostering fair, respectful employment conditions for the team
  • Building meaningful relationships with local communities
  • Reflecting regularly on how they can deepen their positive impact

According to Sala Beach House, “our journey to Fair Trade Tourism certification has been transformative for our team. Living alongside the ocean, we see firsthand the impact humankind has on the natural world — a daily reminder of our responsibility to tread more lightly. Through the certification process, our team has embraced a deeper consciousness about how we operate, shifting the way we care for our people, our community, and our environment and striving to become better every day. For our guests, this means every stay at Sala is not just a beautiful retreat, but a meaningful contribution to a more ethical, sustainable way of travel."

Sala’s achievement of FTT-Certified status marks an important milestone in their sustainability journey—and signals to guests, partners, and the wider industry that ethical tourism is not just possible, but essential.

FTT Certification ensures that Sala Beach House meets strict criteria aligned with global sustainable tourism standards, while remaining grounded in the real-world development priorities of its local context. In achieving certification, Sala joins a growing movement of tourism businesses across Southern Africa that are proving tourism can be a force for good.

Congratulations to the Sala team on this important step—welcome to the FTT family!
